In winter, more than at any other time of year, indoor plants are worth their weight in gold. Shorter daylight hours mean we spend more of our time indoors, sometimes only seeing our gardens on weekends.

Especially heartening to come home to when its bleak outside, fresh living plants inject instant beauty and elegance into any room. And, when windows are more often closed, they can also help to create a healthier indoor environment.

Plants absorb carbon dioxide and convert it into oxygen while improving humidity. Scientific research has shown that some plants are also capable of absorbing unpleasant odours and harmful gases released by furniture and decorating products like flooring and paint.

Of course, indoor plants lift winter spirits simply by looking good. Lucky for us, some are incredibly undemanding and forgiving of neglect. These tough low-maintenance beauties from Gellerts AirSoPure range make for a greener, fresher interior at home and at work.

Tough and easy care Air So Pure plants

ZZ Plant

With a unique spiral structure and highly attractive glossy, deep green foliage, ZZ plants (Zamioculcas) are very resilient against drought, neglect, dry air, lowlight and bugs, while their ‘bio-filtration’ systems help purify the air.

Fiddle Leaf Figs

Popular Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata) is one of a number of beautiful easy-care Ficus in Gellerts' Air So Pure range. Its upright form and stunning tropical looking leaves make it an excellent choice for living rooms.

Rubber trees

Dark green indestructible Ficus elastica is a long-time, retro favourite. Adding colour accents to the mix today are striking ‘Tineke' and ‘Ruby’.

Ferns

Beautiful indoor ferns bring extra texture with their finely divided lacy fronds - which nature has designed perfectly for absorbing carbon dioxide and converting it into oxygen. Great  bathroom plants, these tough and easy-to-grow beauties enjoy humidity. The Air So Pure range includes Boston fern, bird’s nest fern, staghorn fern and Pteris.

Philodendrons

Fabulous tropical foliage and a tough constitution are the hallmarks of the Philodendron genus.  Depending on the variety and where they are grown, they can grow to a metre or more. Check out the many different Philodendron varieties in the Air So Pure range.

Peace lilies

Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum) are scientifically proven to be efficient absorbers of indoor air pollution. With striking, glossy, greenleaves and white, cobra-shaped flowers they are very easy-care long lived plants.

Anthuriums

Popular as indoor plant and cut flowers, Anthuriums are easy-care and colourful. Group different colours of Anthuriums together or use them as colour accents with green foliage plants. In exchange for some attention they can repeat flower throughout the year.

Winter Houseplant Care

  • Water very sparingly. In winter, the potting mix should be dry on top.
  • Move plants away from direct sun.The sun is at a lower angle in winter.
  • Shift tropical plants away from cold draughts. Find a warm part of the house where there is bright light but not direct sun.
  • Wipe the dust from leaves with a damp cloth. Add oil for extra shine and to kill scale insects (but don’t use oil on palms or ferns).
